If you’re looking for types of Hawaiian fish to eat for dinner, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed.
After all, there are quite a few types of tropical Hawaiian fish. And many of these may be unfamiliar to mainlanders. Also, many of the meals that you’ll be eating on your vacation could be brand new.
Whether you want to eat sushi, sashimi, Hawaiian poke, or an unforgettable seafood entree, Hawaii is the place to do it.
Here are some of the best types of Hawaiian fish that we like to offer to our guests:
Ahi
Ahi is a name that refers to either the Bigeye tuna or yellow fin tuna. Both are popular and delicious.
This fish is best eaten raw as sashimi, sushi, or poke… we also love it seared, leaving it raw in the inside.
Mahi Mahi
Mahi Mahi is another delicious Hawaiian fish, you might have tried this before but it’s doesn’t taste the same as the fresh caught Mahi Mahi
We love to just keep it simple and let the fresh fish speak for itself cooking it with herbs from our garden
If you like a little crunch we love to use the panko japanese bread crumbs and crushed mac nuts to make a light crust
Coconut Milk also gives a new spin to fish… we love to make a special coconut curry while the fish is cooking and we serve it under it.
Ono
Ono in Hawaiian means delicious, and we agree !
It is a fast fish and it is difficult to catch, making it a prize catch. One key thing with Ono is that you can’t over cooked because it gets tough !
We like to use it as seared sashimi.
Opakapaka
The Hawaiian pink snapper, or the opakapaka, has light pink flesh and a delicate flavor. It holds the reputation as the islands’ most premium snapper.
When caught during the winter months, it is high in fat, making it ideal for sushi or sashimi.
Onaga
The crimson red snapper, similar to Opakapaka, also found in deep waters has the benefit of much less mercury than other game fish.
We love to prepare it very simple, we love to just put tho whole fish in the oven covered with salt !
